Project overview
Structural waterproofing to a new-build teaching extension using a monolithic hot melt system beneath a paved podium and planted areas. Hot melt was specified because the finished deck sits directly over occupied classrooms, where a fully bonded, self-healing membrane offers the highest available protection against long-term water ingress.
The challenge
The waterproofing sat beneath a hard landscaped finish, meaning any defect would be effectively inaccessible once the podium build-up was complete. There was no tolerance for a failure. The programme also placed the waterproofing on the critical path between frame completion and landscaping, with both trades holding fixed follow-on dates.
Our solution
Absolute Waterproofing installed a fully bonded hot melt monolithic membrane, applied in two coats with a reinforcing fleece and dressed into all upstands, columns and outlets. Every area was electronically integrity tested and independently witnessed before any protection or landscaping was loaded, giving the main contractor documented sign-off ahead of follow-on trades.
The result
Completed within the critical path window, releasing the landscaping package on its planned start date. Electronic integrity testing recorded no defects across the full 890 m². The system carries a guarantee matched to the design life of the podium above it.
